2nd Grade

Welcome to the 2009-2010 school year! We are off to a great start in second grade. We hope you had a relaxing, fun-filled summer.

Important Information:
  • By this time, all school supplies should be purchased and sent to school and labeled with your child’s name. Yellow Quick Word books have been ordered. When they come in, we will let you know so that your child can purchase one for $1. 75. If you are unable to purchase supplies for your child, please let the classroom teacher or Mr. Tressler know as soon as possible.
  • $1.00 for language binders needs to be sent in to the classroom teachers.
  • Second graders are allowed to keep a water bottle on their desk, as well as bring a healthy snack from home.
  • Some of our classrooms are a little cool, so your child may want to keep a sweater or sweatshirt in their locker.
  • In order to have ongoing communication between school and home, we ask that you check your child’s assignment book/agenda every night and sign or initial. There is a small space for us to write notes to each other.
  • On nights that your child does not have assigned homework, we ask that they read for 10-15 minutes. We encourage some of the reading to be done aloud to an adult. This helps you to monitor their fluency.

Language Arts:
We have started the year with a study/review of fiction and non-fiction texts. Most students are able to identify specific features found in each type of text.
We are starting our writing this year, looking at ideas. The teacher models for the students how to take a small moment, and write to give details about that idea.
Word study will begin with a quick review of long and short vowels, as these are important skills and patterns for our students to be able to use.
Fluency and comprehension are an integral part of all content areas, with greater emphasis during language arts.

Math:
Many skills will be covered during math. These skills include counting, coins and combinations, addition, subtraction and the number system. Students are asked to discuss, explain and write about their math thinking on a daily basis. This helps us to understand their thinking, as well as serving as a model for other students in the class.

Social Studies:
We have begun our unit on Communities. The students are currently learning about what makes a place a community through reading, discussion and creating.
Character Counts was incorporated into our first week of school and will continually be emphasized throughout the school year.

Thank You!
